Communications Intern - Office of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

he Role: The Office of Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is seeking a Communications Intern for the upcoming fall session.

Essential Job Function:  Interns will work closely with the communications team to assist the Congresswoman’s communications strategy, keep track of the latest news that pertains to both the Representative and the district, support the communication and office staff on assigned projects, and create visual aids for both internal and external publication. Interns will also support staff with administrative tasks to serve the constituents of New York’s 14th Congressional district. 

Communications Intern responsibilities will include:

  • Writing and Editing: Help draft and edit social media posts, press releases, and newsletters to share updates and messages from the Representative.

  • Social Media Help: Assist with drafting social media content, monitoring comments, and tracking engagement to support the Representative’s online presence.

  • News Tracking: Monitor news coverage and track mentions of the Representative and key issues, summarizing findings for the team.

  • Research Assistance: Conduct basic research on policy topics, current events, and public opinion to support communications and messaging efforts.

  • Preparing Briefs: Assist in putting together briefing materials, talking points, and speeches by gathering information and drafting initial content.

  • Team Collaboration: Work with other team members to ensure consistent messaging and support various communication activities and projects.

  • Updating Databases: Help maintain and update contact lists and media databases to keep communication efforts organized.

  • Creating Visuals: Assist in designing simple visual materials like infographics and flyers to support communication efforts.

  • Documenting Events: Attend and take photos at events, and help write brief summaries or reports about the activities.

  • Administrative Support: Assist with any constituent intake and support casework requests.

You are collaborative, progressive, and eager to work in a fast-paced environment, in which you are challenged to lean into visionary and intersectional thinking, looking to transform our society and economy. 

You should have a good understanding of strategic communications techniques and be an unconventional thinker who is looking to take on a new challenge. 

You should be a strong writer and communicator, and have the ability to thoroughly research, analyze, and summarize topics in a short timeframe.

Location and Work Environment: The internship will take place in our Washington DC office

Interns are compensated at a rate of $18/hour, unless sponsored by an outside organization also compensating at a rate of at least $15/hour.
