Creating a Digital Portfolio

A digital portfolio is an electronic collection of your experiences, with examples, and helps you market yourself to employers.

What to Include

  • About Me - who you are, how you got here, and where you see yourself in the future

  • Up-to-date curriculum vitae and/or résumé

  • Well thought out research statement - this allows you to showcase your academic interests, relevant coursework, and demonstrate potential for future growth

  • Samples of your best writing

  • Examples of projects - these can be either things you’ve done in school or on your own

  • Recorded presentations

Portfolio Tips

  • Use only your strongest pieces—you don't need to include everything you've worked on. Focus on showcasing your best projects to highlight your top work.

  • Classwork is a great way to build your portfolio, but it shouldn't be the only thing. Be sure to also include personal projects, such as videos you've created or work you've done for volunteer activities.

  • Be sure to include your resume in a visible and accessible section of your digital portfolio to give a comprehensive view of your skills and experience.

  • Prioritize visuals in your portfolio to quickly convey your work, allowing employers to understand it without reading lengthy text. Use impactful images, videos, or graphics to showcase your projects instead of relying on paragraphs.

  • Include only the work that you can confidently explain as meaningful to your skills and experience. If you're unsure, revisit it later once your portfolio is more complete.

  • Your portfolio is an ever evolving tool. Make sure to review, edit, and update the content often.
