Creating an Elevator Pitch
An elevator pitch is a concise, 30-second introduction to yourself, designed to communicate key points and make a connection. It's named for the short time it takes to ride an elevator, ideal for meeting someone you've been eager to connect with. Elevator pitches are useful at events, such as career fairs, where you might encounter potential job or networking opportunities.
Who am I?
Write a brief list of ways to describe yourself tailored to your audience. In a professional networking situation, focus on relevant items like your concentration at UH, co-curricular activities, and hometown, rather than personal hobbies or family details.
Example: My name is Sam Smith and I’m a junior at the University of Houston studying public relations. I’m also the vice president of the UH chapter of PRSSA.
What do I do?
Focus on one or two key points that you want the person to remember about you in the 30 seconds you have. Highlight the skills and experiences that drive your career focus, and make a connection to help them understand your career goals and priorities.
Example: Last summer I interned with a communications firm here in Houston. I created social media content and graphics aimed to increase engagement as well as worked on press releases with our team. I loved the work and would like to pursue something similar in the future.
What’s my ask?
End by asking a question, whether it’s a request for advice, sharing information, or a request to stay connected. Including context on why you attended the event can also be helpful.
Example: I’m at the career fair hoping to find an internship opportunity. Can you tell me if your company will be hiring interns this fall and if so, how I can apply?
